AHD vs. MHD vs. NHD

-sz was a predecessor of –s, -ss, -?..

There were some changes with the sibilants. MHD 'z' and 'zz,' developed out of "t" at the Second Sound Shift, and became unvoiced 's' (written 's,' 'ss,' or '?) and 'ts' (written 'z' or 'tz') respectively.

z also appears as c before e and i. After vowels it is weakened to ʒ ("weak z", or "sharp s", written as geschwänztes z "tailed z"; also transcribed as ȥ "z with hook"), after short vowels geminating to ʒʒ (haʒ, genitive haʒʒes "hate"). This group from early times begins merging with ss, ultimately the origin of the ?of Modern German orthography.

So z became s, ss or ?and zz became z or tz.  Name endings would also have been changed applying this “Primary Language Change.”
